Melbourne, Australia – Cricket Australia has announced that the historic 150th anniversary of Test cricket will be celebrated with a special day-night Test match between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in March 2027. This pink-ball Test, scheduled from 11th to 15th March, will commemorate the first-ever Test match, which was played between the same two teams at the MCG in 1877.

This will be the first-ever day-night Test at the MCG, a decision aimed at maximising spectator turnout and boosting global television ratings. Unlike the traditional Boxing Day Test, which takes place during the holiday season, this historic match will be played on regular school and workdays.

Historic Test to Clash with IPL

The 2027 cricket calendar looks incredibly busy for Australia. The Aussies will first tour New Zealand for a four-Test series in 2026-27, followed by a five-Test series in India between January and February 2027. After that, they will host England for this landmark Test match.

Notably, this match will clash with IPL 2027, which is set to commence on 14th March. Additionally, Australia may have to compete in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final in June, followed by the Ashes series and the ICC ODI World Cup, making it an intense year for Australian cricket.

With this announcement, excitement is building among cricket fans worldwide, as the historic occasion promises to blend the rich tradition of Test cricket with the modern appeal of day-night matches. The countdown to a truly iconic moment in cricket history has begun!
